Interesting Stuff / Stuff That Interests Me
BOOKS AND AUTHORS
Bibliocracy
(Andrew Tonkovich interviews authors and talks books on KPFK, Pacifica Radio, Los Angeles. Andrew is also editor of the Santa Monica Review)
The Mark on the Wall
(Lisa Alvarez keeps us up-to-date on the literary swirl in Southern California (esp. in the OC))
New York Review Books Classics
(One of the most consistently excellent presses; any book you choose from their list will likely range from very good to astonishing. At the House of Fours we have them shelved by color instead of alphabet—Jeff might be a bit obsessed. Haven’t read the novels of Sylvia Townsend Warner? Richard Hughes’ A High Wind in Jamaica? The romans durs of Simenon? Bruce Duffy’s novel about Wittgenstein? Get going. Plus, great kids’ books as well)
Small Beer Press
(Run by the fabulous writer Kelly Link and her partner Gavin Grant, this press features books mainly of a particular fantasy/science fiction bent, curated for quirk and quality. Worthwhile for the re-issues of Geoff Ryman alone)
RESOURCES FOR WRITERS
University of Redlands
(Intensive undergraduate creative writing major. I’m biased, of course, since I work here)
Community of Writers at Squaw Valley
(An excellent summer writing conference)
FILM
J. Hoberman
(I started reading him in the Village Voice as an undergraduate, and he remains one of my favorite film critics)
Ubu Web: Film and Video
(The whole site is fascinating for its avant garde audio archive etc. The film section is especially useful if you are in the mood for George Kuchar’s Hold Me While I’m Naked, say, or Joseph Cornell’s Rose Hobart (and when aren’t you in that mood?))
